Teasmade dilemna #1 - how can I keep the milk cold overnight?

Doesn't the milk go off? It's the ultimate teasmade question.

Teasmade dilemna #1 - how can I keep the milk cold overnight?

When you own a teasmade, you have to set out your morning tea tray at bedtime. It doesn't take long to get into the habit.

First, you put the loose tea or teabags in the teapot, then you'll need:

  • cups or mugs
  • teaspoons
  • a bin or a saucer for used teabags
  • sugar (if you take it)
  • and if you drink your tea white - you'll need some milk.

But doesn't the milk go off overnight?

This is without doubt the number one question I am asked.

No, not in cooler climates, or when the nights are cool.

Most teasmade users find that they can keep the milk in a small jug alongside the teasmade, and it never goes off.

Skimmed milk is an even safer bet, because of the low fat content.

That means that you won't be needing anything fancy - just a small jug or bottle.

I'll run through some options...

Jugs

Let's start with something with retro styling to go with your teasmade! I adore these Gurgly glug jugs. They come in no multiple different colours to suit your decor. I picked a funky 70s orange one to show you, but there are some subtle colours too!

I'm obsessed with this little ceramic milk carton! The small opening is ideal to minimise any dust motes settling on the milk, but you could easily drape a handkerchief over it.

I could share Gisela Graham mini jug designs all day long - they are so sweet that I couldn't decide which one to pick. In the end, I decided that Robins are delightfully cheery for a morning brew, and they're not just for Christmas - they're for garden lovers and bird lovers too!

I can't leave out the classic cow-shaped milk jug. This gorgeous petite example is as cute as a button.

Here's the bigger version if you're drinking multiple mugs of milky tea.

Jugs with lids

I rather like this stainless steel jug with a lid. These days they're marketed for latte art, but I think you could appropriate one for the bedside table, don't you?

Bottles

This little milk bottle is just charming.

Hot nights

It might be tempting to use small catering pots or sticks of UHT milk in hot climates or warmer weather, but personally I don’t recommend them. Just think of all that plastic waste - and it won’t taste quite as good either.

I prefer keeping the milk in a small vacuum flask. There are many different designs to choose from, but my favourite is this one, which has a great bedside table vibe. As you can see, it's available in a range of colours (they remind me of lipstick!)

Mini Fridges

Finally, if you need a powered cooling experience, and a place to chill your overnight oats ready to serve in bed the next morning (bonus!) how about using a mini-fridge?

This stunning Russell Hobbs Mini Fridge is the best seller on Amazon, and not without reason. It's super stylish, functional, and the perfect compact size to keep in the bedroom. It's also available in a range of colours, including this gorgeous Nordic white version.
