Can you buy a teasmade in the US?
I receive many enquiries about buying British made teasmades in the USA. Indeed, some Americans are so enthusiastic about teasmades that they buy a vintage British model and try to adapt it.
Were any British teasmades exported in the past?
UK appliances work without modification in countries with identical voltage and hertz. As a consequence, Goblin and Hawkins exported many automatic tea makers to Australia.
Only Goblin tried exporting to the US, and it was only briefly, for two years, between 1976 and 1978. The model they exported was the Goblin 860 and they made spare parts available via BSR Macdonald.
Then a few years ago, in about 2015, Swan manufactured US versions of the Swan STM201: the Swan STM201-US and the STM201N-US. I believe these have now been discontinued.
What is available today?
Let's take a look at some contemporary alternatives to a teasmade, all available on Amazon in the US.
Smart kettles
First up is the smart kettle. Many of these can be set off remotely (or when you're asleep!) using a scheduled start in the app.
The Barisieur
The wonderfully Heath Robinsonesque Barisieur is available in the US.
Breville
The Breville Kettle 1 was formerly known as the One-Touch Tea Maker. It can be programmed to make the tea in the morning.
Cuisinart
Alternatively our US friends may like to try the Cuisinart 14-Cup Coffee Maker which can also be used for tea. It is fully programmable 24 hours ahead, and can therefore be used as an alarm. It is available in a range of colours, of which I thought the one below was particularly reminiscent of the magnolia coloured teasmade!
Cuisinart Coffee Maker DCC-3200CRM
Colour: Cream. Size: 14-Cup. Link for Amazon in the US.
