In 1972 Goblin looked into the idea of manufacturing a Coffeesmade. In February 1972 a Development meeting decided that Sales should conduct a market research survey to investigate coffee drinking habits in the UK and Europe before coming to any conclusions and commencing design work.

In March 1972 a design meeting looked into the idea of building a machine based on a Philips Coffeemaker, but incorporating the features of a teasmade. By June, Mr Barber was engaged in checking what patents protected the Philips machine, and breadboard models were being constructed.

Two designs were presented in August 1972 and it was agreed that these should be laboratory tested.
