On 17 December 1891 Samuel Rowbottom applied for a patent for his Automatic Tea Making Apparatus. The patent is for an Automatic Heating Apparatus, number 22077, 17th December 1891. On 17th August 1893 two men from Salford, Lancaster, patented a gas-powered teasmade. James Alfred Greenhalgh and his neighbour, John Thomas Hardman, a clerk who lived at 8 Granville Street. They appear to have been in business together in Regent Road. In their Patent application they wrote: “The object

James Perry, a watchmaker of 54 Rugby Place, Brighton, applied for a patent for a ‘Combined Alarm, Clock, and Water Heating Apparatus’ in 1898. This is the only invention I have spotted to date with an alarm whistle!
