Tips on buying secondhand

Please read our Safety warning. If you want to use a teasmade regularly it is best to avoid a vintage model unless you are a confident mechanical engineer or electrician - or have access to one.

Common models from the late 1960s to the 1980s sell for between £5 and £35 depending on condition. Models from the 1950s and early 1960s fetch £35 to £75. Pre WW2 models may go up to £150, and the very oldest and rarest may command over £200.

There are not many collectors so prices are not generally inflated, but remember, you’ll pay more if you buy in the winter, especially before Christmas.

Beware of false claims of rarity or age. For example the Hawkins Classic is often advertised as Art Deco when in fact it dates from 1963.

Buying online

You can often buy or sell a secondhand tea makers online, locally or nationally. There are a wide variety of websites and apps, such as eBayGumtreeShpock, or FaceBook Marketplace.

Buying at car boot sales

Car Boot Sales are a great place to buy and sell teasmades, and you may find a fantastic bargain that has been lurking in an attic - it may even be boxed and unused!

Selling old teasmades

Please don’t throw your old teasmade out. Your model might be just the one somebody needs to add to their own collection. (Personally, I am only interested in pre-war models). If you'd like to try and sell your teasmade, I recommend eBayGumtreeShpock, or FaceBook Marketplace, but beware of scammers!

Donating old teasmades

If you'd rather donate your teasmade, you may be able to find your teasmade a new home on FreecycleFaceBook Marketplace, or perhaps at a charity shop dealing with electricals (including some Red Cross and British Heart Foundation branches), or a Men’s Shed.

Beyond repair?

Is your teasmade past the point of no return? It may still have a sale value for its parts - you could sell it as one unit or break it up and sell spares individually.

If you decide to dispose of your teasmade, you can find good advice on recycling electricals on the Recycle Your Electricals website.
